Open the FILE tab while something plays and you'll see a waveform of the track, with its format, bit depth and sample rate listed beneath. It's the app's version of turning the cassette over to read the fine print.
What you can learn
Say you've got an album that sounds a bit thin. The inspector can show whether the files are a compressed format or a lossless one, and what sample rate they were saved at. Sometimes the answer is the files and not your headphones.
The signal path
The same tab shows the output path, and the chain the sound travels through: FILE, DECODE, EQ, OUTPUT. It's a tidy way to see what sits between the file and your ears. We cover the output side in its own article.
Connected to the tape grade
The numbers here are the same ones that decide a cassette's tape type. Higher bit depth and sample rate move the tape up the grades.
